Import and Bringing in Products (Chapter 16)
KRAV’s Chapter 16, Import and Bringing in Products, aims to make sustainable choices for Swedish consumers and to promote organic production in other countries. Products and raw materials produced outside Sweden can be KRAV-certified if they are organically produced and meet KRAV’s extra requirements for imported products. These extra requirements include standards and audits concerning animal welfare, biodiversity, climate impact, and working conditions.
Organic standards vary between countries due to local traditions, climate, and other conditions. Locally adapted standards often carry greater credibility, which is why KRAV may accept certain differences in organic regulations. This means that products certified under the EU Organic Regulation, or other organic standards recognized by the EU, can be KRAV-certified if they also fulfil the extra requirements outlined in Chapter 16.
Purpose of the Regulatory Review
The purpose of the review of Chapter 16 is divided into three parts, parts 1 and 2 forming the first phase. This phase aims to clarify KRAV’s position regarding the certification of EU-organic products from countries other than Sweden. Specifically, it will address:
- The scope of what may be certified upon import and bringing in products
- How verification of the extra requirements must be conducted
Once this strategic direction is established, the review will enter the next phase, focusing on specific questions related to potential new extra requirements. These issues will be identified during ongoing and future reviews, and may relate to topics such as wild harvesting, general rules, livestock management, and crop production.
The goal is to publish the proposal and invite public comments in spring 2026, with planned implementation on January 1, 2027.
